With A Terrible Fate

Introduction: The Legacy of Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII defined two decades of JRPGs. Final Fantasy VII Remake will define two decades of what it is for a video game to tell a story.

With a Terrible Fate began as a single series of articles exploring The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Our founder, Aaron Suduiko, undertook the project of analyzing a different aspect of the game every week between the announcement of its 3D remake and the release of that remake in order to demonstrate the breadth and depth of its value as a groundbreaking work of art. This new series, undertaken over five years after that initial series, proposes to undertake a similar project for a game that’s similarly close not just to our founder’s heart, but also to the hearts of other video-game analysts who have joined With a Terrible Fate since its inception: Final Fantasy VII.

In the many conversations we’ve been having since the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, it’s become clear to us that this artwork stands at the nexus of many key frontiers in video-game storytelling: at once, it looks back on two decades of narrative innovation and forward to what must happen in order to take this beloved storytelling medium to its next level. In that spirit, our analysts will be exploring every aspect of this game that they can think of—from the obvious, to the subtle, to the moving, to the absurd—in order to better understand just what this game is. It’s clear to us that this game is a beast of its own that’s changed the video-game menagerie for good; less clear to us is the exact nature of the beast.

We can’t wait to embark on this journey—and, in true Final Fantasy fashion, we can’t wait to take all of you, our friends, with us.
